FELIZ DIA DA TERRA / HAPPY EARTH DAY!

I am the Earth and the Earth is me.

Com algum atraso, porque não tenho estado por cá, aqui ficam, em celebração do Dia da Terra, este bonito poema de Jane Yolen, e uma lindíssima paisagem do Nordeste Transmontano, tirada perto de nossa casa, há dois meses atrás.

With some delay, because I've been away for the whole week, here is my celebration of Earth Day, with a beautiful poem by Jane Yolen, and a picture of one of the wonderful landscapes of the Portuguese Northeast, taken near our home, two months ago.

Desafio - a 6ª foto

Em resposta ao desafio da RUTE, segundo o qual devemos publicar a 6ªa foto da 6ª pasta do arquivo das fotos do nosso computador, aqui fica o que encontrei. Na verdade, fiz um bocadinho de batota, pois esta não é a 6ª, mas sim a 9ªa foto da pasta. É que na 6ª, 7ª e 8ª apareciam as minhas filhas em grande plano, e eu não gosto de as exibir assim. Quando forem maiores, elas decidirão se querem aparecer. Esta é uma fotografia da Bolota, uma das nossas cadelas, que infelizmente já morreu. A fotografia foi tirada em 2008, durante um intervalo num concurso canino. Entretanto, dêem uma espreitadela ao blog da Rute, pois vale a pena.

In reply to RUTE's challenge, according to which we should publish the 6th picture in the 6th file inside our PC's pictures' file, here's what I found. In reality, I did a little cheating, for this is not the 6th, but the 9th picture. The other three had my daughters in the foreground and I don't like to expose them like that. When they grow up, they'll decide if they want to show up. This is a picture of Bolota, one of our dogs, unfortunately not alive anymore. It was taken in 2008, during a break in a Dog Show. Meanwhile, go take a peek at RUTE's blog, it is worth a visit.

Exhibition

Na segunda-feira passada fui com as miúdas à abertura de mais uma exposição no Espaço História & Arte, do fotógrafo espanhol Carmelo Calvo. Embora os enquadramentos urbanos não estejam entre os meus temas preferidos, estas imagens têm todas uma luz e um grão que lhes confere uma certa aura de mistério, que me agradou bastante.

Last Monday I went with the kids to the opening of a photography exhibition by Carmelo Calvo at Espaço História & Arte. Despite the fact that the urban settings are not among my favourite themes, these pictures have all misty look about them that I really liked.

Depois de darem uma vista de olhos, as miúdas decidiram que também queriam criar qualquer coisa, por isso enfiaram-se nos escritórios da galeria a desenhar (sempre que aqui vimos, dá-lhes uma inspiração repentina...) E eu aproveitei para tirar mais uma fotografia através da janela interior, apanhando algumas das muitas pessoas que vieram à abertura da exposição e também um dos meus trabalhos preferidos do artista residente João Ferreira - a impressionante louva-a-deus que se vê do lado direito da imagem.

After looking around, the girls decided they wanted to make some art too so off they went to the gallery office and started to draw (they always feel an urge of inspiration whenever they come here...) And I took the chance to take another picture through the window at some of the many people that attended the opening and catch as well one of my favourite sculptures by resident artist João Ferreira - the amazing Mantis you can see at the right side of the image.

Signs of Spring

Apesar de ainda estar bastante frio, os sinais da aproximação da Primavera aumentam a cada dia que passa. A semana passada vimos o primeiro dente-de-leão em flor deste ano e a minha filha mais velha fotografou as primeiras joaninhas da estação. Fica uma ilustração do primeiro, feita em acrílicos sobre papel de aguarela.

Although it's still cold, spring is definitely arriving and we've been noticing more signs as each day goes by. Last week we saw dandelions blooming for the first time this year and my older daughter took pictures of the first ladybirds of the season. Here's an illustration of the first one, rendered in acrylics on watercolour paper.

Moorhen

Fiz esta ilustração de uma galinha-de-água há muito tempo atrás e decidi repescá-la porque hoje vimos três destas aves no parque da cidade, ao pé do rio. Conseguimos aproximar-nos, mas assim que chegávamos demasiado perto, elas fugiam para a vegetação, para voltarem a saír apenas uns segundos mais tarde, assim que voltavam a sentir-se seguras. É um óptimo sítio para voltar com tempo, um par de binóculos, o caderno dos desenhos e uma máquina fotográfica com um bom zoom - certamente não aquela que eu levava e com a qual tirei esta fotografia a uma delas, em boa camaradagem com um pombo. Depois de ver esta ave ao vivo outra vez, fico com a sensação que a minha ilustração não lhe fez justiça. A galinha-de-água é uma ave de aspecto delicado e gracioso e eu fi-la parecer demasiado pesada. Quer-me parecer que vou mesmo ter que voltar ao parque de caderno de desenhos na mão...

I did this illustration of a Moorhen a long time ago. I decided to pick it up, because today, we saw three of the in the town's park, along the river. We managed to get closer to them, but as soon as we got too close, they ran into the vegetation, to come out again within just a few seconds, as soon as they felt safe again. It's a great place to go back with time, a pair of binoculars, a sketchbook and a camera with a good zoom - certainly not the one I was carrying and allowed me to take this picture of one of them, in good companionship with a pigeon. After looking at the real thing again, I now find my illustration doesn't make justice to it. Moorhens are delicate and graceful and I made it look too heavy. I guess I do have to go back to the park, sketchbook in hand...

Collecting

Ainda sem tempo para desenhar. Mas pelo menos, tenho conseguido dar uns pequenos passeios ao fim do dia. Às vezes, entre mim e as miúdas, trazemos para casa pequenos objectos que lhes chamaram a atenção (uma pedra, um líquene) ou que eu gostaria de desenhar (os dois paus retorcidos). Daqui a uns dias, quem sabe...

No time for drawing, yet. But at least, I've been going out for short walks in the afternoon and sometimes, between me and the kids, we bring home small things that either caught their attention (a piece of limestone, a lichen) or that I'd like to draw (such as the two twisted twigs). In a few days, maybe...

Durante as minhas pesquisas na internet a propósito do ensino doméstico, encontrei um blogue muito interessante chamado Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock unknown edition [Paperback(1986)]. É o diário das explorações pelo mundo natural de uma família americana. Para além do relato das suas experiências, ilustrado com belas fotografias, é costume lançarem regularmente desafios à participação de outras famílias, com base nas actividades propostas num livro antigo (1922), mas cheio de informações correctas e interessantes. O livro está disponível aqui, de forma gratuita, uma vez que já se encontra no domínio público, e foi assim que o comecei a ler. Estou a gostar muito, e cheia de vontade de pegar no caderno dos desenhos e ir para o campo...

During my web browsing through homeschooling subjects, I came across a wonderful blog called Handbook of Nature Study. It is the online nature journal of an American family, illustrated with fine pictures and hosting regular challenges to other families based on Anna Comstock's book Handbook of Nature Study. It's an old book (1922) but full of correct and very interesting information.
The book is available here for free download. I'm just starting to read it and already loving it, urging to pick up my sketchbook and go out to the field...

Winter Walk

Um curto passeio de Inverno com as miúdas revelou-se uma boa oportunidade para um desenho. Elas fizeram o mesmo, até sermos interrompidas pela chuva, e obrigadas a correr de volta para casa.

Kids and the Arts

Desde pequeninas que levamos as nossas miúdas a visitar exposições de artes plásticas. É um tema que me interessa e nunca me ocorreu deixá-las em casa para visitar sozinha uma exposição. E ainda bem, porque vejo que é raro elas não gostarem verdadeiramente da visita. Nas poucas ocasiões em que não se interessaram pelos objectos expostos, gostaram dos espaços amplos, que aproveitaram para brincar. Mas não foi o caso desta exposição de máscaras de José António Nobre. Gostaram mesmo muito e observaram cada uma em pormenor, reparando nos objectos do dia-a-dia nelas integrados: garfos, funis, passadores, peças de fruta, pedaços de cortiça… Tenho impressão que nos próximos dias vão começar a aparecer mascaras lá por casa. Só espero que não desapareçam muitos talheres...



Since they were little, we've been taking our kids to arts exhibitions. It's something I enjoy and it never crossed my mind leaving them at home so that I could go alone to an exhibition. I'm glad I didn't, for I feel they are developing a taste for it. In the rare occasions where the art objects do not catch their attention, they always enjoy the open spaces which they use to play. But this was not the case of this exhibition by José António Nobre. They really enjoyed looking at his masks built in a variety of materials, and noticing the use of familiar objects like forks funnels, strainers and even fruit. I have a feeling that some masks will start being created at home in the next few days. I just hope that cutlery doesn't start disappearing...

Bats for everyone

Este era o aspecto do meu estirador há umas semanas atrás. Estava a trabalhar numas ilustrações para um livro infantil sobre morcegos, escrito por uma amiga. De repente, as minhas duas filhas desataram a desenhar morcegos a toda a hora... e aqui ficam alguns dos resultados.

This is how my desk looked some weeks ago. I was working on some illustrations for a kid's book on bats written by a friend. Suddenly, both my kids developed a weird urge to draw bats... and here are some of the results.

Portrait

Esta sou eu, vista e retratada pela minha filha mais velha, que tem 7 anos. Gosto imenso deste estilo Picasso-Modigliani (de notar que ela nem sequer sabe quem são). Ainda por cima, ficou parecido! No fim, fiquei a pensar se o Picasso ou o Modigliani não teriam crianças por perto, que os tivessem influenciado no seu trabalho. Quando tiver um tempinho, a ver se dou uma vista de olhos nas biografias deles...

This is me, as seen and portrayed by my older daughter, who's 7. I love it's Picasso-Modigliani style (by the way, she doesn't even know who they are). And on top of it, it does look a bit like me! Also, it left me wondering whether Picasso and Modigliani had any kids around them to influence their art. I think I'll have a look into their biographies when I have a little time...

Big chestnut tree

Gosto muito de castanheiros, especialmente quando são velhos e têm grandes troncos torcidos e cheios de buracos, que servem de refúgio a uma quantidade de animais selvagens. Um dia, quero fazer uma ilustração de um castanheiro, com todos os pormenores e texturas do tronco. Para já, este Verão, fiz um apontamento rápido no meu caderno, que aqui fica.Os soutos são uma paisagem característica desta região e agora entramos na época em que os ouriços começam a caír (ontem comprei as primeiras castanhas da estação). Em tempos uma peça fundamental da dieta, a castanha foi relegada para segundo plano quando a batata foi trazida para a Europa. Nesta região, contudo, a castanha continua a ser muito apreciada, para além de ter um papel importante na economia local. Eu sou uma apreciadora de castanhas: cruas ou cozinhadas, em pratos doces ou salgados.

I love chestnut trees. Especially when they are old, they have massive trunks full of twists and holes and they are a refuge to a variety of wild species. One day, I want to make a real illustration of a chestnut tree, with all the trunk details and textures. Meanwhile, this summer I made a small sketch. This region is full of chestnut groves and now is the time when they start shedding their chestnuts to the ground (yesterday I bought the first ones of the season). Once a fundamental part of the diet, the chestnut was relegated to a lesser role when the potato was introduced in Europe. In this region, though, it is still very much appreciated, and used in a variety of dishes, apart from playing an important role in the local economy. I love them raw or cooked in any way.

Science Illustration Class Exhibition

A semana passada foi a inauguração da exposição dos trabalhos dos meus alunos do curso de Ilustração Científica. Apesar de nem todos os projectos que foram levados para casa terem sido terminados a tempo da exposição, as paredes estavam cobertas de excelentes trabalhos. Parabéns a todos! Se passarem por Bragança, podem vê-los ao vivo no Espaço História & Arte até ao final do mês de Outubro.

Last week was the opening of the exhibition with my student's artwork. Although they did not finish in time all the projects they took home, the walls were covered with beautiful illustrations. Summer time

No Verão há mais tempo para desenhar. As miúdas, no entanto, preferem nadar, e é preciso tomar conta delas. As braçadeiras, chinelos, toalhas e uma flor ou outra, tornam-se os motivos possíveis (caneta à prova de água e lápis de cor no caderno de desenhos).

Summer time brings more time for sketching. The girls prefer to swim. I have to watch them, so slippers, arm bands, towels and the occasional flower are the handy subjects (water-proof pen on my sketchbook).
