Illustration Class

This is F., one of my students in the Science Illustration class I've been teaching for around two weeks now. I wanted to sketch the whole class, but I rapidly gave up, for I spent most of the three hours going from one person to another. It never ceases to amaze me how this work looks so different when seen from the student and teacher point of view: very relaxed and very busy. I've done it several times as one and the other, so I should know! I hope that soon I'll be able to post some of my students' work (I just need to remember to take the camera with me next time). They are just beginning, but they are already producing great work.

The Yellow Flags are blooming since quite a while, but I hadn't had time to come here a post an illustration so far. This is one of the more than two hundred species of the Iris genus, all of them good examples of the relationship between plants and pollinator insects, such as honeybees (which are also abundant around here...). As they explore the interior of the flowers looking for nectar, the insects touch the stamens loaded with pollen, as well as the receptor stigma. The large sized flowers of the Iris allow us to easily watch this activity. The Yellow Flag has medicinal properties and was used in old times as purging, emetic and anti-parasite. It is seldom used nowadays because of its extremely acrid nature and also because it can cause violent vomiting and diarrhea. What I do want to try one of these days is to make natural dyes out of it (but without my children seeing, for the plant is toxic and known to cause skin irritation s in some people). It seems that a beautiful yellow dye can be obtained from the flowers and a brown one from the roots. (The illustration was rendered with pencil and watercolour)

Pausing at the gas station

We were riding on the highway and L. stopped at a gas station for an expresso. I stayed in the car with one of the girls (maybe she was sleeping, I don't remember anymore) and noticed this old lady, sitting at the picnic tables, waiting for her family (who had probably gone for an expresso as well). Bad luck, the family came back and took her away before I could finish my sketch. I could see she was not very happy to leave (maybe the driver was not very sensible. I'm just guessing but I'm probably not far from the truth, taking into account our road accidents' statistics). With the lady gone, I concentrated on the falling branches of the tree, now over her empty seat. But L. soon arrived too, and because we were running late, the branches were left unfinished as well (such is the drama of living in the remote inner country, no queuing time for sketching...)

Meeting Room

The next days were not so relaxing. We were basically shut in a meeting room from 9 AM till 7 PM. Luckily, the work was globally interesting and I only had time for one quick sketch, one day when I was getting so hungry that I could not concentrate in the discussions anymore. And I did not have the new pen at hand!

Bruxelas / Sketching in Brussels

Another trip to Brussels, this time with great weather and half an afternoon free (a rare luxury...) which I used to visit the city's Official BookCrossing Zone (a disappointment, practically abandoned), do some shopping and, of course, some sketching. Here's the result, the famous Manneken Pis statue taht - God knows why - attracts so many people. The ink on my pen was coming to the end so the whole sketch looks a bit faded out (I had to buy another one next morning). If you click on the image you'll see a better, enlarged version.

Science Illustration Exhibition

you can click on the image to enlarge it

At the restaurant

Still working hard, but this morning I really had to go out. After running a series of errands, I spent a bit of time with the girls at the library and then we had lunch at the usual place. While they made their own drawings on the paper towels (they're definitely picking up my bad habits...) I sketched the group sitting at the nearest table. You can't see it from here, but it was a really heterogeneous looking group. The woman looked like an ordinary housewife, the guy with his back to us looked like some kind of rural punk (whatever that means) and the other one from whom you see just a bit of bald head, looked just like one of those urbanoid intellectuals. I wonder what they were talking about.

Sleeping

There's been so much do do in the past weeks, that I've been working late almost every day. Finding time for a nap, or a bit of reading before going to sleep has become a rare luxury. Maybe that's why I felt compelled to sket this guy, who was sleeping in the airplane ahead of me last week. I had been doing exactly the same until that moment, but woke up due to the strong wind gusts that were shaking the plane. Since I was unable to get back to sleep, I decided to take out my sketchbook, so that it wouldn't come to the end of the trip unopened.

Sketching at the Science Centre

On Monday I took the kids to the Science Centre, located right next to the river Fervença, that runs across Bragança. The Centre has large glass walls and the scenery is great. I did this sketch sitting next to one of these walls, while the kids had fun visiting the centre with one of the guides.

Unfinished

This was the last work I started in last year's watercolour course, but didn't have time to finish. It has been untouched since then. It shows the main town's square, on the day of one of the most popular fairs. The small red and dark dots you see on the stands are thousands of ceramic vases of all sorts and sizes. We buy them and offer them to those we love. The first cherries of the year are also sold here, artistically arranged around small sticks that we nibble at, while browsing the fair.
Back to the watercolours, tomorrow is the opening of exhibition of the student's work. You can take a peek here and drop us a visit if you are so inclined. I'll be there and try to get inspired enough to finish what I have started...

Springy

Spring is definitely approaching. This morning I sipped my coffee outside, listened to a woodpecker in the chestnut grove and watched the first blooming narcissus in the garden, while the girls played with stones and sticks and sand. Before returning to the computer (I have SO MUCH work to do!) I couldn't help making a quick sketch of one of the flowers with black pen and coloured pencils.

My book is out!

It has been ready since the end of December, but it has only been a while since I could convince myself to actually read it in it's final format, such was the fear to find too many misprints. Fortunately, they're not too many and the graphic project by 1000olhos turned out really great. For more information or purchasing this book on biological swimming pools, you can go here or here.

Telescópio Solar / A solar telescope

The last time we went to the library, my oldest daughter (6 yo) wanted to bring all the books "on planets" she found. We agreed that she would choose two, and the next time we went there we would bring more. So we've been reading about the solar system, galaxies, telescopes and the like. She's so excited, that yesterday, I found her reading he names of the solar system's planets by herself (she has just started to learn how to read). She especially liked an illustration of a solar telescope, showing how a mirror on top of a tower reflects the sun along a subterranean tunnel and then another mirror at the bottom sends the image up to an observation room where the astronomers work. We went outside with a small mirror so that I could show her how it works. After having fun directing the sun's light in several directions, she went in, fetched the book, went out again and with a tiny shovel, started to dig her own solar telescope... and so proving there is no impossible when you're six...

Secretária cheia de tralha / My cluttered desk

* * *
I spent part of the weekend working, while the small one had her afternoon naps and the older one was busy outdoors with her daddy. Yesterday, the nap lasted almost three hours. Eventually, I was so sick of typing in my keyboard that I took a break to sketch what I had before me. This was the result. I know, I know... and the sketch doesn't even cover the whole desk. Anyway, I take refuge in Einstein's words, who apparently had a similar problem: "If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign of?"
