Intercidades / Travelling by train

A semana passada tive que viajar até ao sul e pude usar o meu meio de transporte favorito - o comboio. No comboio podemos ir sentados, andar quando nos apetece, não se enjoa, por isso pode-se ler, trabalhar no computador ou até mesmo desenhar. Eu fiz um pouco de tudo isto.

Mas a certa altura, o ar condicionado da nossa carruagem avariou e tivémos que nos mudar para outra (lá fora estavam 42ºC, não sei exactamente até quanto subiu a temperatura no interior, mas uma coisa é certa: estava demasiado calor!). A nova carruagem tinha uma temperatura óptima, mas melhor do que isso, tinha também um excelente motivo para desenhar. Assim, escolhi estrategicamente um lugar de onde pudesse desenhar este casal de meia idade e o seu canário. É caso para dizer que há males que vêm por bem.

Last week I had to go south. I love traveling by train - I can sit but I can also walk, I don't get sick, therefore I can read, work on a report or even draw. I did a bit of everything, actually.

At some point, the air conditioner in our carriage went down, so after a while we had to move to another compartment (it was 42ºC outside, I'm not sure how hot it became inside without the air conditioner, but it was definitely too much!). The new compartment had a great temperature but better than that, it also had a great sketching subject. So I strategically chose a seat from where I could sketch this middle-aged couple with their canary in its bird-cage. As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining.

Model Drawing

Há anos que andava a querer fazer uma coisa destas, mas por uma razão ou por outra, nunca foi possível. Quando vivia perto de Lisboa, andava sempre a correr de um lado para o outro e apesar de várias instituições oferecerem aulas de desenho de modelo, eu nunca consegui organizar-me de maneira a frequentar uma. Depois vim para o norte, a vida tornou-se substancialmente mais fácil e mais calma, mas... aqui não havia aulas deste tipo... até agora. Felizmente, abriu recentemente na cidade um excelente centro de arte contemporânea (Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais, cliquem aqui para mais informações) que, entre várias outtras actividades interessantes, está neste momento a oferecer aulas de desenho com modelo. E assim, uma tarde por semana, lá vou eu batalhar com poses que mudam a uma velocidade vertiginosa e um "objecto" com o qual nunca tinha trabalhado antes, o corpo humano. Para alguém habituado a fazer ilustrações hiper-detalhadas, que demoram várias horas a terminar, começar e acabar um desenho em 30 segundos é um verdadeiro desafio! Mas muito compensador, não tanto pelos resultados, como podem ver, mas pelo muito que tenho aprendido com o Manuel Trovisco. O desenho lá de cima foi feito em 30 segundos, com carvão, o de baixo em 5-7 minutos, também com carvão, mas num papel um pouco mais texturado. As mãos, os pés e as pernas, são sem dúvida as partes do corpo mais difíceis de desenhar.

I've been wanting to do this for ages, but somehow, when I lived near Lisbon I was always running from one place to the other and never found the time to take a model drawing class. Then I came up north, life became a lot easier and calmer but... no model drawing classes available... until now. A great contemporary art centre (Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais, check it out here) opened in town recently and this year, among many other interesting activities, they are offering a model drawing class. So, one afternoon every week, there I go, to struggle with rapidly changing poses of a subject that I had never worked before- the human body. For someone used to make detailed ilustrations that take several hours to render, drawing a whole body for a mere 30 seconds is a real challenge! But it's really rewarding, not in terms of results, which are still... well, what you can see! - but regarding all that I am learning with the talented Manuel Trovisco. The first drawing was made in 30 seconds using a charchoal stick, the second is what I was able to achieve in 5-7 minutes, using a slightly more textured paper. Hands, feet and legs are definitely the hardest body parts to draw.

Sketching at the mall

Aqui estão dois apontamentos feitos no centro comercial, enquanto tomava conta das miúdas, que brincavam no parque, e esperava por uma amiga que viria almoçar connosco. Estava tudo muito calmo e o par de adolescentes e a senhora às compras na banca dos perfumes eram os únicos motivos disponíveis, para além das minhas filhas e de mais um garoto que brincavam no parque. "Estás a desenhar-nos, mamã?" perguntou a mais velha, ao que eu tive que responder "Não". É que como estou constantemente a desenhá-las, desta vez resolvi variar o tema.

These are two sketches done at the mall, while looking after the kids, who were playing in a park, and waiting for a friend who would join us for lunch. It was a very quiet hour and the pair of teenagers and the woman shopping at the perfume stand were the only subjects I could choose from, apart from my children and one more kid in the park. Since I am constantly sketching my daughters, this time I chose the adults instead, and had to answer "No", when my eldest asked "Are you drawing us, mummy?".

Back from holidays

Chegámos! Passámos belos momentos em algumas das mais bonitas praias do país. Nadámos, pescámos, passeámos, brincámos, lemos e eu fiz uns desenhecos. Não tantos como gostaria, mas mesmo assim ainda trouxe alguns que vale a pena mostrar (acho!). Todos feitos no caderno de esboços Moleskine - ao qual demorei um bocadinho a adaptar-me devido à superfície extremamente lisa e escorregadia das folhas. Decididamente, não é o ideal para aguadas com aguarelas, mas em contrapartida é excelente para desenhar com caneta. Mas chega de conversa. Aqui fica o primeiro desenho - não foi o primeiro a ser feito, mas é o primeiro a ser mostrado, por ser o meu preferido. Mostra a minha filha mais velha à beira da piscina biológica do turismo rural onde ficámos. Nos próximos dias, vou mostrar mais alguns. Entretanto, tenho que pôr em dia as visitas aos outros blogues!

We're back! We spent great moments in some of the most beautiful beaches of the country, swam, fished, walked, played, read and I also did a little sketching. Not as much as I would have liked to, but there are at least a few worth showing here (I think!). All of them done on my Moleskine sketchbook and I found it a bit hard to get used to the extremely smooth surface of the paper - and definitely not suitable to add watercolour washes, but great for working with ink. So enough talk and here's the first sketch from the holidays - not the first one I did, but the first one I want to post, because it's my favourite. It shows my 6 yo looking at the biological pool of the farm where we were staying. I'll be posting more on the days that follow. Now, there's a lot of catching up to do on other arts blogs!

Sketchbook - at the restaurant

O trabalho ainda se acumula, por isso os desenhos continuam a resumir-se aos rabiscos dos cadernos de apontamentos. Este foi feito ontem, na pizzaria onde vou quase todas as semanas com as minhas filhas. Já há bastante tempo que desenho em locais públicos sem que ninguém repare. No restaurante, desenho normalmente os outros clientes - já tentei as empregadas algumas vezes, mas elas mexem-se normalmente tão depressa, que nunca tinha conseguido acabar nenhuma. Bem, ontem consegui, e fiquei tão contente, que o mostrei a uma das minhas filhas. Para meu horror, ela foi direita às meninas da pizzaria - com quem já tem bastante à vontade - caderno na mão, e disse: "olhem, a mamã desenhou o restaurante!" A rapariga que eu desenhei ficou literalmente de boca aberta e murmurou um "Sou eu? Obrigada..." Na verdade, acho que ela foi tão apanhada de surpresa como eu! Em casa, colori com aguarelas e agora estou com dúvidas se lho hei-de dar a próxima vez que lá for. É que, para além da surpresa, ela pareceu realmente lisongeada por me ter servido de modelo, mas a verdade é que é só um rabisco, nem sequer se parece muito com ela e, acima de tudo, nao quero parecer uma grande convencida. Alguma ideia? Já alguém passou por uma situação semelhante? Mmm?

Work is still a bit heavy, meaning art keeps resuming to short doodlings on my skecthbooks. This one was done yesterday at the pizza restaurant I go with my kids once a week. I've been sketching in public places for a long time without anyone noticing. In the restaurant, I usually sketch other customers - I've tried the girls that work there before, but they usually move so fast that I've never been able to finish one. Well, today I did and showed it to one of my daughters. To my dismay, she went straight to the girls - with whom she is already quite familiar - my sketchbook in hand, and said: "look, mum has drawn the restaurant!" The girl I sketched just stood looking with her mouth wide open and mumbled a faint: "Is this me? Thank you..." I think she was as surprised as I was! I added watercolours when I arrived home and now I'm having doubts whether I should give it to her the next time I go there. I mean, she looked really pleased to be the model of the sketch, which is why I am thinking about this in the first place, but it is really just a sketch and it doesn't even look a lot like her and most of all I don't want to look conceited. So... has anyone had a similar experience before? And even if not, what are your feelings about it?

IF-Fortune

O tema desta semana do desafio Illustration Friday - fortune (sorte) - deu-me o pretexto ideal para trabalhar um bocadinho mais um dos estudos que mostrei aqui há uns dias atrás. Pode parecer uma frase feita, mas a verdade é que as minhas filhas fazem-me sentir a pessoa mais afortunada que existe!

This week's Illustration Friday topic - fortune - gave me the perfect opportunity to work a little further one of the studies I've posted here earlier. It may seem one of those things everybody says all the time, but the truth is that my children make feel the most fortunate person on earth!
