Acredito que quando se decide aceitar, ou não, um novo trabalho, vários pontos devem ser tidos em conta. Para além da questão evidente do dinheiro - afinal, quer gostemos quer não, todos temos contas para pagar - há a considerar o investimento de tempo que nos exige, o desenvolvimento profissional e a satisfação pessoal que nos proporciona e, intimamente ligada a esta última, os princípios éticos que o regem. Por isso, antes de tomar uma decisão acerca de um potencial novo trabalho, faço-me sempre muitas perguntas: vou aprender coisas novas, melhorar o meu currículo, fazer contactos úteis? Vou chegar ao final do dia com a sensação de ter feito algo que valeu a pena? Está este trabalho e a pessoa/empresa para quem o farei, de acordo com os meus valores e princípios éticos? Já recusei trabalhos por não preencherem esta última condição, recusei outros que preenchiam todas, excepto o facto de me obrigarem a passar demasiado tempo longe da família. E aprendi que é melhor viver com menos dinheiro, mas mais satisfação pessoal, tempo para aqueles de quem gostamos e uma consciência tranquila. Foi por isso que hoje, ao ler esta notícia, fiquei muito satisfeita por confirmar que uma das empresas para quem trabalho, embora me proporcione rendimentos diminutos, se encontra entre as mais amigas do ambiente, dentro do seu ramo de actividade.

I believe that when deciding about accepting or not a new job, several things should be weighted. Apart from the obvious income side of the question - we all have our bills to pay, whether we like to or not - there other things to ponder: time investment, professional growth (will I learn new skills, improve my CV, make useful contacts?), personal satisfaction (will I arrive to the end of the day with the feeling of having made something worthwhile?) and, closely linked to this, integrity: is the work I am doing and the people/company I am doing it for in accordance with my values and ethics? I have turned down jobs in the past because they did not fulfill this last condition. And I have turned down others that fulfilled all of them but would take away too much time from my family. And I have learned it is better to live with less income but more personal satisfaction, time for the ones you love and a clear conscience. All this to say that today I was very happy to read this news, confirming that I am working for one of the top eco-friendly businesses in their field, even though the income I earn from it is really minor:

Boas Festas / Merry Christmas

Com metade de Dezembro já passado e o Natal ao virar da esquina, aqui fica o meu mais recente cartão, disponível na minha loja GCU, para vos desejar umas boas festas. A relação entre as raposas e o Natal pode não ser evidente para a maioria, mas quem vive no campo habitua-se a ouvir os seus latidos agudos, ao anoitecer, quando os dias se tornam mais frios, e tem início a época do acasalamento. E é precisamente no mês de Dezembro que eles se tornam mais frequentes, prolongando-se até Janeiro/Fevereiro.

It is amazing how time flies and here we are again: half of December is already gone and Christmas is around the corner. Wishing you a Merry Christmas with my newest card available at my GCU storefront. The link between foxes and Christmas may not seem evident, but those who live in the countryside are used to listen to their calls, when the days turn colder and the mating season begins. It is precisely in December that fox calls start to be more frequent, extending until January/February.

Concentar-se como uma raposa / Focus like a Fox

Quando terminei o curso de Biologia, já lá vão muitos anos, desenvolvi a minha tese de licenciatura sobre a ecologia da raposa. Durante cerca de um ano, fiz radio-telemetria e aprendi muito sobre estes fantásticos carnívoros, numa das mais bem conservadas áreas naturais do nosso país. Mas nada se compara à observação directa destes animais durante uma sessão de caça. Quando detectam uma presa, as raposas ficam completamente imóveis, enquanto, totalmente concentradas e alheias ao que as rodeia, procuram a sua localização exacta por entre as ervas ou sob a terra. Assim que o conseguem, lançam-se num salto que lembra o de um gato, e imobilizam a presa contra o solo. Foi isto que esteve na base da criação de um novo cartão que está, a partir de hoje, disponível na minha Loja CGU. A ideia é que, quando nos encontramos assoberbados de trabalho, devemos procurar comportar-nos como uma raposa: escolher apenas uma coisa à qual nos dedicarmos de cada vez, e concentrar nela todo o nosso esforço para, desta forma, conseguirmos maior produtividade. Eu, "multitasker" confessa, tenho-me esforçado por aplicar esta estratégia, e devo dizer que me tem ajudado bastante.

A long time ago, when I finished my degree in Biology, I developed a thesis project on the ecology of the red fox. Along nearly one year, I radio-tracked these amazing animals in one of the better preserved wilderness areas of my country and learned a great deal about them. However, nothing comes near to a direct observation of these creatures during a hunting session. When a prey is detected, red foxes stand motionless. When they pinpoint the location of the prey, they launch themselves into the air, pinning it to the ground. This is what inspired me to create this new card, which is now available at my GCU store.
The idea is that when you are overloaded with work you should try to behave like a fox and focus: pick just one thing to focus on and you will be able to accomplish more. Being a natural multi-tasker myself, I find this strategy helps me a lot in times of stress.

Notícias da Troca de Esboços / Sketch Swap News

Recebi o segundo esboço da Troca de Esboços organizada pelo Tom Serrati, desta vez da Sandy Williams. Mais uma vez, vai muito além de um simples esboço. Na verdade, trata-se de uma verdadeira pintura em miniatura, feita com incrível pormenor, de uma espécie de veado existente nos EUA, diferente da que temos aqui - obrigada, Sandy, o postal é lindo!

I've just received my second sketch from the Sketch Swap organised by Tom Serrati, this time from Sandy Williams. Once again, the "sketch" goes well beyond a mere sketch and is in reality a miniature painting of a White Tail Deer, done in incredible fine detail - thank you Sandy, your postcard is just beautiful!

Correio / Post goodies

Acabei de receber o primeiro esboço da Troca de Esboços em que participei no mês passado e veio nada menos do que do próprio organizador da troca, Tom Serrati. Como podem ver, vai muito além de um simples esboço. Os edifícios estão desenhados em grande pormenor e a aplicação das cores é muito bonita. Trata-se de dois dos 17 edifícios que sobreviveram à destruição da Segunda Guerra Mundial... As minhas filhas gostaram imenso do envelope, enviado da Estação de Correios do Pai Natal e endereçado em nome delas, bem como do postal com renas escrito em português, para que o pudessem entender, e eu gostei muito do postal com fantásticas imagens  de auroras boreais - obrigada, Tom!
I've just received my first sketch from the Sketch Swap I entered last month and the first one to arrive was this lovely watercolour by Tom Serrati himself. For me, this goes well beyond a sketch and is closer to a finished piece of art. The buildings are pictured in an extremely fine detail and the colours are beautiful. According to Tom, these are two of the 17 buildings that were left in the town of Rovaniemi after WWII destruction... My kids loved the envelope sent from Santa Claus' Main Post Office and addressed to them both and the lovely reindeer's postcard written in Portuguese, so they could understand and I loved the amazing lights of the north postcard - thank you Tom!

I'm so happy! Carvalho-alvarinho / English Oak Card

Na sequência do post anterior, aqui fica mais um cartão feito recentemente para o GCU a partir de uma das minhas ilustrações botânicas favoritas, de um carvalho-alvarinho (Quercus robur). Este cartão está disponível em duas versões (Parabéns e Dia da Árvore).

Following my previous post, here is another recent card made for GCU using one of my favourite botanical illustrations of an English Oak (Quercus robur). This card is available in two different versions (Happy Birthday and Happy Arbor Day).

Cartão novo / New Card

Tenho mais um cartão à venda no GCU (Greeting Card Universe). Fi-lo utilizando uma série de ilustrações individuais de plantas da nossa flora. Não me tinha dado conta que as aprovações estavam a demorar tanto tempo ultimamente por isso o tema da Páscoa já está desactualizado. Vendo as coisas pelo lado positivo, é trabalho adiantado para o ano que vem!

I have a new card on sale at GCU (Greeting Card Universe). I made it using a series of individual illustrations of plants native to Portugal. I wasn't aware card approvals were taking so long these days, so the Easter subject is now outdated, but, well, it's work in advance for next year!

Troca de Esboços - actualização / Sketch Swap Update

Este é o desenho de ontem para a Troca de Esboços do Tom Serrati. Foi mais uma tarde solarenga, mas com bastante vento, pelo que não se tornava tão confortável estar na rua. Saí em direcção ao vale, à procura de um sítio abrigado com alguma coisa interessante para desenhar. Ainda continuo com vontade de desenhar plantas, e queria ver se lá mais para baixo já haveria alguma esteva em flor, mas não tive sorte. Depois lembrei-me que tinha visto algumas soagens perto da horta e dirigi-me para lá. Mas, pelo caminho encontrei um maciço de eufórbias num canto cheio de sol e foi aí que fiquei. O resultado foi este.

Ainda me estou a debater com o tamanho diminuto dos postais. Os meus cadernos são normalmente tamanho A5, alguns maiores (embora prefira os A5, por serem mais fáceis de transportar para qualquer lado) e estes postais têm metade desse tamanho, o que me tem dificultado um pouco a vida. Para tornar as coisas mais complicadas, esqueci-me do lápis em casa, por isso tive que desenhar directamente com a caneta. Na verdade, isto é o que faço habitualmente no meu caderno, para me obrigar a ser mais espontânea (afinal, é para isso mesmo que servem os esboços e os cadernos). Mas como recebi exactamente cinco postais para enviar a outras tantas pessoas, e não consegui encontrar material semelhante aqui na cidade para substituir algum que inadvertidamente possa estragar , tinha pensado começar com o lápis. Não pôde ser assim, e ainda bem, porque acabei por desenhar como se no meu caderno fosse - alguns enganos aqui e ali, mas um resultado final não excessivamente trabalhado, que me agradou.

Agora já só faltam dois cartões. Assim que os terminar, mostro-os aqui.

This is yesterday's sketch for Tom Serrati's Sketch Swap. It was another sunny afternoon, but quite windy, so being outside was not so comfortable. I left home and headed to the valley, in search of a sheltered spot with something nice to sketch. I'm still in a plant mood and I wanted to see if I could find some blooming Gum rockroses in a warmer place, but I had no luck. Then I remembered I had seen a few blooming Blueweed near my vegetable garden and headed that way, but before I reached it, I found a nice clump of Euphorbia in a sunny spot and that's what I ended up sketching. This is the result. 

I am still struggling with the small size of the postcards. My sketchbooks are usually A5 size (some even larger, although I prefer the smaller ones, for they are easier to carry around). These postcards are approximately half that size, so I'm having a bit of a hard time to adjust. To make things worse, I forgot to take a pencil with me, so I had to use the pen. That's what I usually do in my own sketchbook, actually, in order to force myself to be more spontaneous (that's what sketches are for, after all). But because I received exactly five postcards to send to five people and I can't find similar ones in my small town to replace them in case I ruin one of them, I wanted to take a pencil. Well, that didn't happen and in the end I was glad it didn't, because I was finally able to start sketching as if I was doing it on my sketchbook – a few mistakes here and there, but a satisfying result in the end.

Now there are only two more cards to go. I'll be posting them here as soon as I finish.

Overwhelmed Polar bear / Urso polar sobrecarregado

Às vezes sinto-me como este urso polar... Felizmente, aprendi a lidar com esta situação: o que é preciso é começar, e depois, ir fazendo - uma coisa de cada vez.
Usei esta ilustração para criar um novo cartão (podem encontrá-lo, dentro de alguns dias, na minha loja GCU aqui).

Sometimes I feel just like this polar bear... Fortunately, I've learned how to deal with it: just get started, one step at a time. As simple as that.
I used this design to create a new greeting card (you can hopefully find it within a few days or weeks in my GCU store here).

Inspire Me Thursday - Wood

Esta é a minha primeira participação no Inspire Me Thursday, um dos desafios criativos mais interessantes do mundo dos blogues. Vão lá visitar, que não se arrependem. Para o tema desta semana (madeira), eu tinha pensado pintar um dos grandes castanheiros que crescem perto da nossa casa. Mas o tempo tem estado tão horrível, que acabei por mudar de ideias e pintar um objecto feito de madeira. E fiz esta casa-ninho, que também vou usar para mais um cartão ("Casa Nova" ou "Mudámo-nos", ainda não decidi) da minha loja.

This is my first entry to Inspire Me Thursday, one of the most interesting creative challenges currently ongoing in the blog world. Go there and visit, you won't regret it. For this week's creative prompt (wood), I wanted to paint one of the big chestnut trees that grow near our house. However, the weather has been so dreadful all week, that I decided to paint something made of wood instead. So I did this wooded bird's house, that I will also use for a "New Home" or "We've moved" (still deciding) card for my Card Store.

O meu trabalho está, pela primeira vez, à venda na internet. Sob a forma de cartões, que podem ver aqui. Ainda tenho que trabalhar no layout da loja e colocar lá muito mais "mercadoria", mas estou tão entusiasmada, que tinha mesmo que vir aqui dar a notícia!
