Boas Festas / Merry Christmas

Com metade de Dezembro já passado e o Natal ao virar da esquina, aqui fica o meu mais recente cartão, disponível na minha loja GCU, para vos desejar umas boas festas. A relação entre as raposas e o Natal pode não ser evidente para a maioria, mas quem vive no campo habitua-se a ouvir os seus latidos agudos, ao anoitecer, quando os dias se tornam mais frios, e tem início a época do acasalamento. E é precisamente no mês de Dezembro que eles se tornam mais frequentes, prolongando-se até Janeiro/Fevereiro.

It is amazing how time flies and here we are again: half of December is already gone and Christmas is around the corner. Wishing you a Merry Christmas with my newest card available at my GCU storefront. The link between foxes and Christmas may not seem evident, but those who live in the countryside are used to listen to their calls, when the days turn colder and the mating season begins. It is precisely in December that fox calls start to be more frequent, extending until January/February.

Vida nova na Piscina Biológica / New Life in the Biological Pool

Em finais de abril, numa manhã solarenga mas ainda fresca, fomos surpreendidos por um novo visitante na nossa piscina biológica. Ao abrir a janela, por volta das 7h30, o L. viu uma galinha-d'água (Gallinula chloropus), não... duas galinhas-d'água! Entravam e saiam da água, ora nadando e procurando comida nas margens, ora bicando a erva na zona em redor da piscina. Corremos a buscar a máquina fotográfica e com mil cuidados, abrimos uma nesga da janela para as fotografar.

A galinha d'água é uma espécie bastante comum em Portugal, podendo ser observada tanto em lagoas e albufeiras de grande dimensão, como em lagos, parques e jardins de zonas urbanizadas. Mas foi a primeira vez que a observámos na nossa piscina!

Trata-se de uma espécie fácil de identificar através do corpo escuro, fronte e bico vermelhos com a ponta amarela, e patas claras. As penas da zona inferior da cauda são de um branco bastante conspícuo, como se pode ver na fotografia lá de cima. Apesar disso, esta espécie pode ser bastante discreta, pois é cautelosa e desloca-se frequentemente ao longo da vegetação das margens. Alimenta-se de uma grande variedade de material vegetal, bem como de pequenos animais aquáticos.

Manhã após manhã, ao abrir a janela, as galinhas lá estavam, até que se tornou uma rotina vê-las a nadar calmamente por entre os nenúfares, mas sempre alerta, escondendo-se ao menor ruído. Até que um dia, deixámos de as ver! Passou um dia, dois, três... e as galinhas sem aparecer. Foram-se embora... pensámos com pena.

Mas numa bela manhã de Maio, eis que as belas aves estavam de regresso e... acompanhadas! Afinal não se tinham ido embora, estavam, isso sim, a nidificar e agora regressavam com duas pequenas crias!

As galinhas de água que visitaram a nossa piscina foram muito silenciosas, como convém a quem uma prole a proteger, mas se quiserem escutar o seu chamamento, basta clicar aqui.

In the last days of April, on a sunny but still cool morning, we were surprised to see a Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) in our biological swimming pool. My husband went to open the window, around 7h30 and there it was, this beautiful bird happily swimming around. But wait... it was not one, there were two of them! They went in and out of the water and we carefully opened a tiny bit of the window to take a few pictures.

Day after day,  when we opened the window, there they were. It became a routine to watch them every morning, swimming around confidently but totally alert and hiding at the faintest sound. Until one day... they just vanished! Each morning we peaked at the window hoping to see them, but they were nowhere to be found. They're gone... we thought a bit sad.

But on a beautiful May morning, when we were no longer expecting it, there they were again! Only this time there were not two of them, but four! Two cute chicks were following their mama everywhere, swimming behind her, walking clumsily on top of the water lilies, stopping to beg for food... We don't get tired of watching (and photographing) them!

These moorhens have so far been very silent - no wonder, because they have brood to protect. But if you want to know the sound of their call, you can listed to it here.

Pescar, desenhar e observar aves no rio Sabor / Fishing, sketching and birdwatching at river Sabor

Sempre que passo um dia no rio Sabor, fico maravilhada com a paisagem, a natureza e o sossego. E penso na sorte que tenho em viver a dois passos de um sítio como este, especialmente quando o comparo com a maioria dos rios europeus, por norma tão artificializados. Infelizmente, o Sabor não será excepção por muito tempo, uma vez que uma grande barragem se encontra já em construção. Sendo a obra mais para juzante, este sítio irá permanecer inalterado, fraca consolação, mas ainda assim...

Houve tempo para fazer um piquenique, desenhar, nadar, pescar e até vimos uma magnífica águia-real (Aquila chrysaetus) a ser perseguida por um peneireiro. A fotografia não está famosa, mas se clicarem nela, ficará maior e será possível observar as manchas brancas que permitem saber que se trata de um juvenil e não de um adulto.

O desenho foi feito com caneta preta à prova de água e aguarelas, e mostra as minhas filhas - uma delas a desenhar e escrever no seu recém-estreado diário de férias (uma ideia de que falei aqui e de que ambas gostaram) e a outra tenta apanhar peixes com o camaroeiro. Havia muito mais para desenhar, mas às vezes apetece mais estar do que fazer. Sabem a que me refiro?

Each time I spend a day at river Sabor I marvel at the scenery, the wildlife and the peace. And I think how lucky I am to live close to a place like this, by comparison with the standard European rivers, most of them heavily modified. Unfortunately, Sabor won't be an exception for long (a big dam is under construction downstream), but at least this spot will remain untouched.


We had time for a picnic, sketching, swimming, fishing and we even watched a magnificent young Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetus) being beaten by a kite! The picture is not amazing, but if you click it to enlarge, you can see the white spots in the plumage that show the bird is a juvenile.

The sketch was made with watecolours and water-proof black ink pen (Uni-ball Eye UB157 Rollerball Pen) and shows my kids - one of them is drawing and writing on her new summer diary (an idea I was thinking about here and they both happened to like) and the other one is trying to catch some fish. There was so much more to sketch. But sometimes, you just feel like being, instead of doing. Do you know what I mean?

Concentar-se como uma raposa / Focus like a Fox

Quando terminei o curso de Biologia, já lá vão muitos anos, desenvolvi a minha tese de licenciatura sobre a ecologia da raposa. Durante cerca de um ano, fiz radio-telemetria e aprendi muito sobre estes fantásticos carnívoros, numa das mais bem conservadas áreas naturais do nosso país. Mas nada se compara à observação directa destes animais durante uma sessão de caça. Quando detectam uma presa, as raposas ficam completamente imóveis, enquanto, totalmente concentradas e alheias ao que as rodeia, procuram a sua localização exacta por entre as ervas ou sob a terra. Assim que o conseguem, lançam-se num salto que lembra o de um gato, e imobilizam a presa contra o solo. Foi isto que esteve na base da criação de um novo cartão que está, a partir de hoje, disponível na minha Loja CGU. A ideia é que, quando nos encontramos assoberbados de trabalho, devemos procurar comportar-nos como uma raposa: escolher apenas uma coisa à qual nos dedicarmos de cada vez, e concentrar nela todo o nosso esforço para, desta forma, conseguirmos maior produtividade. Eu, "multitasker" confessa, tenho-me esforçado por aplicar esta estratégia, e devo dizer que me tem ajudado bastante.

A long time ago, when I finished my degree in Biology, I developed a thesis project on the ecology of the red fox. Along nearly one year, I radio-tracked these amazing animals in one of the better preserved wilderness areas of my country and learned a great deal about them. However, nothing comes near to a direct observation of these creatures during a hunting session. When a prey is detected, red foxes stand motionless. When they pinpoint the location of the prey, they launch themselves into the air, pinning it to the ground. This is what inspired me to create this new card, which is now available at my GCU store.
The idea is that when you are overloaded with work you should try to behave like a fox and focus: pick just one thing to focus on and you will be able to accomplish more. Being a natural multi-tasker myself, I find this strategy helps me a lot in times of stress.

Overwhelmed Polar bear / Urso polar sobrecarregado

Às vezes sinto-me como este urso polar... Felizmente, aprendi a lidar com esta situação: o que é preciso é começar, e depois, ir fazendo - uma coisa de cada vez.
Usei esta ilustração para criar um novo cartão (podem encontrá-lo, dentro de alguns dias, na minha loja GCU aqui).

Sometimes I feel just like this polar bear... Fortunately, I've learned how to deal with it: just get started, one step at a time. As simple as that.
I used this design to create a new greeting card (you can hopefully find it within a few days or weeks in my GCU store here).

Coruja do mato / Tawny Owl

Apesar de sempre ter gostado de ficar acordada até tarde, ultimamente tem-me dado prazer levantar-me cedo e aproveitar uma ou duas horas de sossego, para trabalhar sem interferências, enquanto as miúdas ainda estão a dormir. Hoje acordei ainda mais cedo (tenho um prazo muito apertado para cumprir...). Quando abri a janela, vi que ainda estava escuro, demasiado cedo para os ti-ti-tis do pisco-de-peito ruivo... Mas depois ouvi o longo ulular de uma couja-do-mato, provavelmente a dar por terminada uma noite de caça aos pequenos roedores do monte e a regressar ao seu buraco, num dos velhos castanheiros que encima a colina em frente. É um som lindíssimo (arrepiante para alguns) feito por uma ave muito bonita que em tempos ilustrei, embora não tenha conseguido fazer justiça à sua beleza. Although I've always been a bit of a night-owl, lately I'm enjoying waking up early and profiting of one or two hours of quiet working time, while the kids are still asleep. Today I woke up even earlier (I have a very tight deadline to fulfill...). I opened the window and it was still dark, too early for tweety robins yet... But then I heard the long quavering hoot of a Tawny Owl, probably ending up a hard night of work chasing small rodents and returning to it's roost in one of the old chestnut trees that top the hill facing our kitchen windows. A beautiful sound (creepy according to some) made by a wonderful bird I tried to portray once - but I really couldn't do justice to her beauty. You can find lots of interesting facts about this species, including where and how to find them in the great Aves de Portugal website (look here for the Tawny Owl, Strix aluco).

Robins in winter / Piscos no Inverno

Quando as folhas tiverem caído
E os dias começarem a ficar mais curtos;
Quando a noite escura correr as cortinas
à hora do lanche, sobre o sol;
Quando as flores do Verão tiverem desaparecido
E nos abrigarmos com quentes agasalhos
O pisco regressa ao jardim...

Peço desculpa pela tradução fanhosa, mas não consegui encontrar este poema em português, por isso vai mesmo assim.
Ando há já algum tempo para escrever este post, porque o poema fala de cartões de Natal, mas acabei por andar demasiado atarefada, por isso ele aqui vai, agora. Afinal de contas, ainda estamos no Inverno e continuo a acordar todas as manhãs ao som to "ti-ti-ti" dos piscos-de-peito-ruivo.
A neve proporciona excelentes oportunidades para os fotografar, e também já desenhei e pintei um, há vários anos atrás.
E por falar em aves, desenhos de aves e respectivos cantos, não deixem de ler o último post da Sharon Lovejoy, onde ela mostra uma página do seu último livro, que fala precisamente sobre este assunto.

When the leaves have fallen
And the days begin to shorten;
When the dark night draws its curtains
At tea-time on the sun;
When the summer flowers have gone
And we put our warm coats on
The Robin comes back to the garden...
Is he waiting to be drawn
To go on a Christmas card?

I wanted to have posted this before, for the poem speaks of Christmas cards, but somehow, things got too busy (as they always do around Christmas time), so here it goes. After all, itś still winter and I'm still waking up to the "tweet -tweet-tweet" sound of these cute birds every morning.
The snow brings great opportunities to photograph them and I did draw and paint one of them many years ago.

European Grass Snake / Cobra-de-água-de-colar

Acabei de vender os direitos de publicação de uma das minhas ilustrações preferidas, esta Cobra-de-água-de-colar (Natrix natrix). Uma boa maneira de começar o ano, não tanto pelo dinheiro, mas mais pelo prazer de ver publicada uma coisa feita por mim. Vai fazer parte de um folheto de comemoração do Ano Internacional da Biodiversidade publicado pela BioPiscinas.

I've just sold the rights for publication of this old favorite illustration of mine, a grass snake (Natrix natrix). A good way to start the new year, not really for the money, more for the joy of seeing something you did getting published. It will be part of a leaflet on the celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity published by BioPiscinas.

Moorhen

Fiz esta ilustração de uma galinha-de-água há muito tempo atrás e decidi repescá-la porque hoje vimos três destas aves no parque da cidade, ao pé do rio. Conseguimos aproximar-nos, mas assim que chegávamos demasiado perto, elas fugiam para a vegetação, para voltarem a saír apenas uns segundos mais tarde, assim que voltavam a sentir-se seguras. É um óptimo sítio para voltar com tempo, um par de binóculos, o caderno dos desenhos e uma máquina fotográfica com um bom zoom - certamente não aquela que eu levava e com a qual tirei esta fotografia a uma delas, em boa camaradagem com um pombo. Depois de ver esta ave ao vivo outra vez, fico com a sensação que a minha ilustração não lhe fez justiça. A galinha-de-água é uma ave de aspecto delicado e gracioso e eu fi-la parecer demasiado pesada. Quer-me parecer que vou mesmo ter que voltar ao parque de caderno de desenhos na mão...

I did this illustration of a Moorhen a long time ago. I decided to pick it up, because today, we saw three of the in the town's park, along the river. We managed to get closer to them, but as soon as we got too close, they ran into the vegetation, to come out again within just a few seconds, as soon as they felt safe again. It's a great place to go back with time, a pair of binoculars, a sketchbook and a camera with a good zoom - certainly not the one I was carrying and allowed me to take this picture of one of them, in good companionship with a pigeon. After looking at the real thing again, I now find my illustration doesn't make justice to it. Moorhens are delicate and graceful and I made it look too heavy. I guess I do have to go back to the park, sketchbook in hand...

Science Illustration Class

Dentro de aproximadamente um mês, quando tiver despachado todos os relatórios e papeladas que me têm mantido ocupada nos últimos meses, poderei finalmente relaxar um pouco e divertir-me, com a orientação de um curso de ilustração científica no fantástico Espaço História e Arte. Within a month, approximately, I'll be done with all the reporting and paperwork that has been keeping me busy for the last months. Then, I'll be relaxing and having fun, teaching an illustration class at the fabulous História e Arte Gallery - yay! You can check out all the details here.

Na verdade, trata-se da nossa exposição, pois vamos ser quatro ilustradores científicos a expor os nossos trabalhos na sala de exposições principal do Centro Cultural de Bragança. (editado para acrescentar que, evidentemente, estão todos convidados)

IF - Polar

Esta é a minha proposta para o desafio Illustration Friday desta semana. É muito óbvio, bem sei, mas sempre tive vontade de desenhar um urso polar, só que nunca tinha tido um pretexto para o fazer. Este foi desenhado com uma esferográfica e depois colorido no Gimp.

This is my entry for this week's Illustration Friday theme. It is quite obvious, I know, but I've always wanted to draw a polar bear, just never have had the excuse to do it. This was drawn with a ball-point pen and then coloured with Gimp.

Kingfisher

O trabalho de ilustração para o livro das piscinas biológicas está quase pronto - faltam apenas duas ilustrações (ou uma e meia, para ser mais precisa, uma vez que os desenhos preliminares já estão prontos). Aqui está um dos últimos que fiz, um Guarda-rios em aguarelas e lápis de cor. Desenhei-o em cima de um poste, que é como costumo ver um deles da minha janela, quando chega o fim do Verão. Fica ali durante longos momentos, até dar um mergulho repentino na água, em busca de alguma coisa para comer.

The illustration work for the biological pools book is almost ready - just two illustrations to go (actually, one and a half, since the preliminary drawings are ready). Here's one of the last I did, a Kingfisher rendered in watercolours and coloured pencils. I did it sitting on a pole, which is how I usually watch one of them from my window when the summer ends. He stands still for long moments, before diving in the water to catch something to eat.

Marbled Newt - colour

Esta é a versão a cores do tritão, na qual estou agora a trabalhar com aguarelas. Está quase pronta, mas ainda vou ter que trabalhar na cabeça, patas e crista. Talvez lhe dê ainda uns retoques com lápis de cor, mas ainda não decidi. Optei por fazer a versão a cores vista de cima, que é como normalmente vemos estes animais no campo. A ilustração completa vai incluir dois desenhos mais simples, a p&b, com o animal noutras posições. (P.S. O L. diz que está muito giro - o que, vindo dele, é um grande elogio).

This is the colour version of the newt I'm working on at the moment with watercolours. I'm almost finished, but I still have to work on the head, legs and crest. Maybe I'll add a touch of colourd pencils as well, but I haven't made up my mind yet. I chose to show the animal as seen from above in this ciolour version, since this is how we normally see it in the field. The complete illustration will include two other drawings, b&w of other views. (P.S. L. says this is very cute - coming from him, this is a big compliment)

Marbled Newt

O L. cumpriu a promessa e apanhou-me um tritão para eu desenhar. A tarefa foi diabólica, não tanto porque ele se mexesse muito dentro do taparuere (o que realmente fazia), mas principalmente por causa das minhas duas filhas (de 2 e 5 anos), que não despegaram assim que se aperceberam que havia alguma coisa viva em cima do estirador... Mesmo assim, lá consegui uma série de esboços úteis, alguns dos quais mostro aqui (o primeiro foi completado com a ajuda de várias fotografias que o L. tirou) e também já comecei uma versão a cores. Reparem como o mesmo animal parece tão diferente quando visto de cima (como normalmente acontece no campo), ou de lado (como é costume aparecer nos guias).

L. kept his promise and caught me a newt to draw. Sketching it was hell, no so much because he moved a lot inside our tupperware (which he did) but mainly because of my two daughters (aged 2 and 5), who wouldn't let go as soon as they found there was something alive on my work surface... Anyway, I managed a series of useful sketches, some of which are shown here (the first one completed with the help of a series of photographs L. took) and I already started a colour version. Notice how different the same animal looks when seen from above (as usually happens in the field) or laterally (as normally shown by guidebooks).

Dragonfly

Parte do trabalho de hoje: uma libelinha pousada em cima de uma erva (pintada com aguarelas e tinta). Estes lindíssimos insectos são extremamente ágeis e têm uma capacidade de manobra em vôo espantosa, sendo capazes de pairar, voar para a frente, para trás e para os lados. São também muito úteis, pois são predadores activos de mosquitos e outros insectos picadores. As libelinhas passam parte do seu ciclo de vida dentro de água. As suas larvas são tão vorazees como os adultos, caçando por perseguição cuidadosa e emboscada. Quando se encontram suficientemente próximas da presa, disparam subitamente o lábio inferior - modificado em forma de maxila articulada, com duas mandíbulas afiadas em forma de gancho na extremidade. A presa, que fica instantaneamente empalada nos ganchos, é depois trazida para a boca e comida.

Some of today's work: a dragonfly resting on a grass leaf (watercolour and ink). These beautiful insects are incredibly agile and manoeuvrable, being able to hover, glide, fly forwards, backwards and sideways. They are also very useful to us, since they are active predators and help us get rid of mosquitoes and other biting insects. Dragonflies live part of their lives underwater and their aquatic larvae are as voracious as the adults. They hunt either by careful stalking or ambush. When close enough to their prey, they suddenly thrust forward their lower lip - modified into a long, hinged jaw terminating in two sharp, hook-like mandibles. The prey is instantly impaled on the hooks, then drawn back to the mouth and eaten.

Water Tiger (Distiscus marginalis)

Mais trabalho em curso: um escaravelho de água em aguarela e lápis de cor. Os desenhos preliminares foram feitos a partir de um insecto vivo que o Luís encontrou "preso" numa poça de água da chuva acumulada num plástico. Este desenho é parte de uma ilustração maior que vai aparecer numa caixa de texto com informação sobre a espécie. Que é, diga-se, verdadeiramente espantosa: este insecto aparentemente inofensivo ataca quase tudo o que mexe, incluindo girinos de anfíbios e até pequenos peixes. Uma vez a presa agarrada, o escaravelho injecta-lhe um poderoso veneno, que liquefaz o interior do animal, transformando-o num fluido espesso. Este é depois aspirado pelo insecto, até que a vítima fica reduzida a um invólucro vazio.

More work in progress: a water bug in watercolour and coloured pencils. The preliminary drawings were made after a live animal my husband found trapped in a tiny puddle of rain gathered on a plastic. This will be part of a larger illustration to go into a box containing info on the species. Which is truly amazing: this seemingly innocuous bug attacks almost anything that moves , including amphibian larvae and even small fish. Once the prey is caught, the bug injects a powerful poison in its body, that soon melts its insides until they become a thick fluid. This is then sucked by the water tiger until the victim is no more than an empty bag of skin.

Green Frog

O meu primeiro "post" mostra parte do trabalho que tenho em curso neste momento: uma rã verde que estou a pintar com aguarelas. Faz parte de um conjunto de ilustrações de animais e plantas para um livro sobre piscinas biológicas que também estou a escrever.
