A nossa casa / Our house

The sketches for the Sketch Swap are done, but the habit remained and this was yesterday's sketch. Our motor hoe is way more intricate than it looks at first sight...

This is the last sketch for the Sketch Swap and this time my 8 year old came with me, her own sketchbook and watercolour pad in hand. She wanted to sketch the same thing as I did, so we searched together for a plant to draw. After we settled for the Crane's-bill (also known as Dove's foot) Geranium, it was she who found the right one to draw - all nice and straight, under the shadow of a wild cherry tree, for it was hot under the sun. It was fun sketching in her company and she was really patient, waiting for me to finish. She only asked "Why do you take so long?" after she finished hers, made another two drawings and picked up some carrots, but more out of curiosity than boredom. And then I finally finished and we went home for it was time for a snack.

Desenhar no chuveiro / Sketching in the shower

Another sketch for the Sketch Swap. I had a really hard time with this one... This time I did head to the vegetable garden to draw the Blueweeds, but... they were gone! I guess the rabbits ate them... Anyway, it was a bit windy again, so I thought it would be a good idea to go into the greenhouse, where it was nice and warm. I immediately thought about the carrots, for they look so "sketchable", with their orange tops showing above the soil and the lacy greenery heading upwards. The intricate pattern of the leaves wasn't the hardest part, though. The hard part were the constant water showers each time a wind gust made the greenhouse covering shake and pour all the water droplets accumulated there from overnight condensation... Because I worked with watercoulours, a shower could completely ruin my sketch, so I had to be in alert mode all the time and bend over my sketch each time a shower came - as you might guess, it was the most active sketching session!

This is yesterday's sketch for Tom Serrati's Sketch Swap. It was another sunny afternoon, but quite windy, so being outside was not so comfortable. I left home and headed to the valley, in search of a sheltered spot with something nice to sketch. I'm still in a plant mood and I wanted to see if I could find some blooming Gum rockroses in a warmer place, but I had no luck. Then I remembered I had seen a few blooming Blueweed near my vegetable garden and headed that way, but before I reached it, I found a nice clump of Euphorbia in a sunny spot and that's what I ended up sketching. This is the result.
I am still struggling with the small size of the postcards. My sketchbooks are usually A5 size (some even larger, although I prefer the smaller ones, for they are easier to carry around). These postcards are approximately half that size, so I'm having a bit of a hard time to adjust. To make things worse, I forgot to take a pencil with me, so I had to use the pen. That's what I usually do in my own sketchbook, actually, in order to force myself to be more spontaneous (that's what sketches are for, after all). But because I received exactly five postcards to send to five people and I can't find similar ones in my small town to replace them in case I ruin one of them, I wanted to take a pencil. Well, that didn't happen and in the end I was glad it didn't, because I was finally able to start sketching as if I was doing it on my sketchbook – a few mistakes here and there, but a satisfying result in the end.
Now there are only two more cards to go. I'll be posting them here as soon as I finish.

Sketching again

Thanks to EVERYDAYMATTERS, a friendly community of artists (from total novices to professional ones), I'm sketching again (almost) every day on my journal.
I've also joined a Sketch Swap launched by Tom Serrati, one of the group's members and after getting a nice pack of five Daler-Rowney Watercolour Postcards, I really felt like doing some serious sketching. Yes, because these sketches will be sent to other members of the group, who in turn will send me theirs. Isn't this the coolest idea?
So far I've done two: the first one is a collection of wild flowers that have just started blooming and the other is a view from the path that runs past my house. I haven't yet decided who I will send them to, I guess I'll finish the whole collection first and then run a raffle.
Ah! it's so good to spend time outside sketching on these first warm spring days!

Tempos (pouco) livres

I published another article in the online magazine PAPEL. This one is about children's leisure time (sometimes not so leisurely) during the Easter break. You can read it here  (in Portuguese only, sorry...).
The sketch above was done a few years ago during one of our amazing egg hunting sessions. The children are a great deal bigger now, but we'll still have our egg hunt this year...

Overwhelmed Polar bear / Urso polar sobrecarregado

Sometimes I feel just like this polar bear... Fortunately, I've learned how to deal with it: just get started, one step at a time. As simple as that.
I used this design to create a new greeting card (you can hopefully find it within a few days or weeks in my GCU store here).

* * *

Today I am copying (English version) and translating (Portuguese version) a post from one of my favourite sites: mnmlist, written by Leo Babauta. I totally relate with what he writes, although his life options do not exactly match mine: I am an omnivore by conviction (not a vegan), I own a car and my home is not exactly small (although it is not huge either). I liked his post so much, that I wanted to share it with my readers, especially those that don't usually read in English. So here it goes.

Living for Everyone Else, by Leo Babauta
A lot of people don’t do minimalism because it doesn’t seem realistic for their lives. But what they often mean is that they don’t want others to think they’re weird.
Wearing the same clothes every day might seem weird to your friends and co-workers. Having no car might make you seem like an oddball. Not having a smartphone mike make you uncool. Living in a small home or an RV might make everyone think you’re poor or crazy. Eating vegan food might make the meat eaters in your life groan or roll their eyes.
But who are we living for? I am all for living to help other people, but when we live our lives to the expectations of other people, we end up living lives we don’t want. And what do we get when we live up to the expectations of all these other people? They really don’t care — they just don’t like things different because they are uncomfortable with change. Staying the same as everyone else doesn’t make everyone else happier — it just doesn’t force them to reflect on their lives.
Where do these expectations come from, anyway? Other people didn’t just make them up — they are customs built up over the years, often very consciously by corporations trying to get us into expensive buying habits. For example, we have so many clothes, gadgets and other possessions because ads have sold us on the idea that we need clothing to look stylish, to be successful, to feel like a woman, to be as good as the people on TV. It wasn’t always this way, and it’s up to us to decide whether we want it to be that way from now on.
I’m not saying we should go live in the woods and ignore society (though that’s not a bad option). I live in society, and yet no one minds me wearing the same clothes all the time. People don’t go wild with anger when they hear that I’m not buying Christmas presents. I might get a raised eyebrow when they find out I don’t have cable TV or a car, and I might have to explain myself when they hear I’m a vegan, but no one gets mad at me and they go on with their lives. I sure go on with mine.
The way everyone else does things isn’t working. People aren’t happy with a life filled with possessions. Driving cars all the time adds to stress, makes people unhealthier, pollutes. People get unhealthy with their standard American diet. Just because everyone else thinks this is the way it should be done, doesn’t mean it’s the best way. Go against the stream — the other fish don’t know where they’re going either!
When it comes to others, be helpful, compassionate, grateful. But don’t live up to their expectations. You’ll be freed of the shackles of meaningless customs, so that you can live as you want.

(note: the picture above was taken last weekend: a picnic, bathing and running in a mountain grassland; no irony intended, a good alternative to the status quo afternoon at the mall...)

The arrival of Spring always brings me a great urge to clean and organize my home - the famous Spring cleaning...

However, this year, it will be different. Instead of just cleaning and re-organizing, eliminating a few broken or unuseful things in the way (old toys, clothes that don't fit anymore, etc.), I decided to dedicate serious thought to each of the objects I've been accumulating along the years. Do I really use it? Is it useful? Is it important in some other way? Why am I keeping it? Definitely, this spring cleaning won't be something to get done with in a weekend. It will most likely extend for several months, but I think it will be worth it. Because in parallel to the physical clutter, I will also be thinking about the things that are cluttering my mind and my time and seeking ways to eliminate what is not important, to be able to focus on what really is.

The sketch above is a reflection of my first efforts. It is insignificant, but at the same time it has great meaning because it was done after many weeks without touching pen and paper, during a great afternoon spent with my husband and children: drawing, reading, birdwatching and hiking in the beautiful Trás-os-Montes countryside.

The book I'm reading is Minimalism: Essential Essays, by Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn. I reccommend it to all of those that feel drawn towards a more simple, more meaningful life. The authors are offering a free copy until April 25th, in exchange for a review. I really think the book is worth your time, as well as the authors blog, where you can find some of the essays contained in the book and many more: The Minimalists.
