The opening of our Science Illustration Exhibition in Bragança was last night. I've never been very fond of any kind of social events, but this one, despite not having a lot of people, went very well. The best part was the chance to meet a few old friends and colleagues that I hadn't seen for quite a long time. And can you believe I even sold a piece? I was not going to price any of my illustrations, for I'm not used to selling originals, just the rights to publish them (this being how illustration usually works). But in the end, Nuno and Fernando decided to price their digital prints and João and I priced three originals each (and we also made a swap between us). I honestly thought they wouldn't sell, for flora/fauna have never been hot art subjects in Portugal where there isn't even a tradition of wildlife art. And I secretly thought "Great, I won't have to part with my originals, then", for believe me, the thought of letting go something you devoted tens, sometimes more than a hundred work hours to, can be really hard. So I was really surprised when I found myself feeling actually happy to see that piece go to the hands of someone that I know genuinely loved it. Let's face it, my husband L. is right when he sais that an illustration is better in the hands of someone who loves it and will hang it in some nice spot in their home and show it to friends and relatives, than packed with dozens of others inside a box where nobody can see it. For although I still have plenty of wall space, there's no way I could hang everything I own (not to speak about my hatred for cluttered spaces). More news from the opening: the mayor was there, he was really interested and made a lot of cleaver questions, there was a local journalist, she also made questions, not so cleaver, but she was very nice. And finally, my two kids (2 and 5 yo) were there, happy and noisy, playing with other kids and it would have been impossible to talk with everyone if it wasn't for L keeping an eye on them. The picture shows the final stages of the putting up of the exhibition, just a few hours before the opening ("mummy, I really like this, I want to work here", M. said)
