Coruja do mato / Tawny Owl

Although I've always been a bit of a night-owl, lately I'm enjoying waking up early and profiting of one or two hours of quiet working time, while the kids are still asleep. Today I woke up even earlier (I have a very tight deadline to fulfill...). I opened the window and it was still dark, too early for tweety robins yet... But then I heard the long quavering hoot of a Tawny Owl, probably ending up a hard night of work chasing small rodents and returning to it's roost in one of the old chestnut trees that top the hill facing our kitchen windows. A beautiful sound (creepy according to some) made by a wonderful bird I tried to portray once - but I really couldn't do justice to her beauty. You can find lots of interesting facts about this species, including where and how to find them in the great Aves de Portugal website (look here for the Tawny Owl, Strix aluco).

  7. As corujas são um animal lindissimo. Aprecio-as bastante.
