A Horta em Abril / Vegetable Garden in April

Primavera é sinónimo de início de trabalho a sério na horta. Agora que temos uma estufa, podemos começar um pouco mais cedo (aqui no nordeste, as geadas prolongam-se pelo mês de Abril fora, pelo que, antes de termos estufa, só começávamos a tratar da horta em Maio - um enorme contraste relativamente ao resto do país!).

Em meados de Março começámos a preparar o solo no interior da estufa e fizémos as primeiras sementeiras: 3 variedades de alface, couve-roxa, tomate-coração-de-boi (o nosso preferido, pelo sabor e polpa abundante) e cebola.

Lá fora, transplantámos outras cebolas, que tinham sido semeadas ainda mais cedo e estado a crescer na estufa durante o inverno (reparem bem no meu "plantador" especial... é um pauzinho aguçado encontrado por ali, mas que faz o seu trabalho tão bem como aqueles todos bonitos que se vendem na loja).

Também semeámos ervilhas e grão e arrancámos as ervas que quase escondiam os canteiros dos alhos, dos morangueiros e das favas.

Já próximo do final de Março, plantámos tomateiros e pimenteiros trazidos do sul do país pelos meus pais (aqui só começam a aparecer mais tarde) e semeámos feijões, tudo dentro da estufa, claro está, caso contrário seria morte certa pelo frio...

Finalmente, hoje comprei sementes de milho doce e rabanetes (estes últimos vão ser uma estreia), que planeio semear esta semana, juntamente com alguns espinafres, que sobraram do ano passado. 

Para além da horta, a Primavera mostra-se em todos os cantos: nos marmeleiros carregados de flores, na figueira cheia de minúsculos frutos - que contraste com estes, no jardim do Zé Júlio, no Algarve! Rezo para que uma geada não os leve a todos (e a mais outras coisas: morangos, cerejas, ginjas, etc....) Nesta altura do ano penso sempre no tempo (que não foi assim há tanto tempo) em que as pessoas dependiam da terra para se alimentarem e  numa única noite de gelo perdiam quase tudo. Aquilo que hoje, para nós, não passa de um contratempo, podia significar, nessa época, muitos meses de fome ou subalimentação...

The beginning of spring means it is time to get serious about the vegetable garden. Now that we have a greenhouse, we can start a bit earlier. So on 12^th March, we started preparing the soil inside the greenhouse and we have sown the first seeds: 3 varieties of lettuce, red cabbage and Beefsteak tomatoes (our favourite because of the great flavour and abundant flesh).  

Outside, we have transplanted onion shoots that have been growing since winter (take a look at my special "planter" in the Portuguese version above - a small pointed stick does the job just as well as the store bought thing) and sown peas and chickpeas. We also started weeding the garlic, strawberry and fava bean beds. 

By the end of the month, we planted tomato and pepper seedlings brought by my parents from the south of the country (it is too early yet to find them on sale here in the northeast) and we have sown beens too.

Today I bought some sweet corn and radish seeds and plan to sow them this week, together with some leftover spinach seeds from last year. Then we'll be transplanting some Cherry tomatoes that grew up inside the greenhouse (they've been growing on their own like weeds ever since we have sown them for the first time, several years ago, so every year we leave a few plants, whenever they sprout on a convenient spot, or transplant them to a better one, if that is not the case).

Everywhere spring is showing at its best: the quince trees in full bloom, the fig trees with the first tiny fruits. I am praying the weather will keep mild, as April frosts are not uncommon around here but if they come too harsh, they can destroy the fragile figs, not to speak of other crops. This always makes me think of the - not so long ago - times when people depended on their land to feed their families and bad weather, instead of being just a nuisance, as it is for us, could mean several months of hunger...
